Stok Kangri trek | Trekking in Ladakh

The Stok Kangri Trek is one of the most thrilling and challenging high-altitude treks in India, offering a chance to summit a 6,153-meter (20,182 feet) peak in the Ladakh region. Known for its dramatic landscapes and extreme conditions, this trek is best suited for experienced trekkers looking to test their endurance. The journey takes you through the stark yet mesmerizing terrain of Hemis National Park, with views of rugged valleys, glaciers, and snow-covered peaks. The changing landscape—from dry, rocky paths to vast snowy stretches—adds to the adventure, making it one of the most rewarding treks in the Indian Himalayas.

The trek typically starts from Stok Village, near Leh, and spans around 8–9 days, with essential acclimatization stops due to the high altitude. The route passes through scenic campsites such as Mankorma, Base Camp, and the Glacier Zone, each offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Karakoram and Zanskar ranges. As trekkers ascend, they experience extreme cold, strong winds, and the physical challenge of thin air, which requires careful acclimatization. The final summit climb is the most demanding part of the trek, often starting at midnight to reach the peak at sunrise. The panoramic view from the top, showcasing K2, Saser Kangri, and other towering peaks, makes the effort worthwhile.

Due to its demanding terrain and high altitude, Stok Kangri Trek was closed for several years to allow the fragile ecosystem to recover and is now subject to strict regulations. It requires prior high-altitude trekking experience, strong physical fitness, and proper acclimatization. Trekkers must also be aware of the risks of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and be well-prepared with the right gear. Despite the challenges, Stok Kangri remains a dream trek for mountaineers, offering a non-technical yet highly rewarding peak climbing experience in the Himalayas.
